Data Warehousing

Data warehousing is the practice of collecting data from many business systems, cleaning it and storing it in one central database built for reporting and analysis. A data warehouse gives teams a single, consistent source for dashboards, trends and decisions across sales, marketing and operations.

What is data warehousing?

A data warehouse pulls in data from sources like POS, CRM, ecommerce and finance systems. The data is organized so it can be queried quickly and compared over time. Teams then analyze it with business intelligence (BI) tools.

How does data warehousing work?

  1. Data is extracted. Records are pulled from source systems on a schedule.
  2. Data is transformed. It is cleaned, standardized and matched across sources.
  3. Data is loaded. The prepared data is stored in structured tables in the warehouse.
  4. Data is analyzed. Analysts and BI tools query it for reports and dashboards.

Data warehouse vs data lake: what is the difference?

What are examples of data warehousing?

Venue or BusinessExample
Retail chainSales from every store combined for weekly reports
Shopping mallFoot traffic and tenant sales compared across properties
AirportPassenger, parking and concession data held in one place
Hotel groupBookings, spend and guest feedback analyzed by property

How do businesses use data warehousing?

  1. Create one source of truth. Every team reports from the same numbers.
  2. Compare performance over time. Years of history support trend analysis.
  3. Combine data across systems. Joining sales, marketing and visit data answers bigger questions.
