Eduroam (education roaming) is a secure, world-wide wireless network access service developed for the international research and education community. It allows students, researchers, and staff from participating institutions to obtain internet connectivity across campuses and when visiting other participating institutions using their home institution credentials.
Eduroam is a global Wi-Fi roaming service that provides seamless internet access across thousands of educational and research institutions. Users can connect to the eduroam Wi-Fi network at any participating location by logging in with the same username and password used at their home institution. This eliminates the need for multiple login credentials and simplifies access when traveling between institutions or across countries.
The service is based on a federated identity model, where authentication is handled by the user’s home institution, while access is granted by the visited institution. It is supported in over 100 countries and tens of thousands of locations globally, including universities, libraries, research centers, and even select public spaces such as airports and city halls.
Eduroam is important because it enables a consistent and secure internet experience for the academic and research community. Key benefits include:
Seamless roaming: Once configured, users can automatically connect to eduroam at any participating site worldwide.
Security: eduroam uses robust encryption protocols, ensuring secure transmission of credentials and data.
Convenience: Users avoid the hassle of requesting guest access or managing multiple Wi-Fi logins at different institutions.
Collaboration: Facilitates academic collaboration and mobility by allowing researchers and students to stay connected when visiting partner institutions.
For institutions, eduroam reduces the administrative burden of managing guest Wi-Fi access and enhances their digital infrastructure with a recognized, trusted solution.
Eduroam is primarily used by:
Students and faculty traveling between universities
Researchers attending conferences or working in collaborative spaces
Academic staff visiting partner institutions or campuses
Library users and individuals affiliated with research centers
In recent years, eduroam has also expanded beyond universities, appearing in hospitals, airports, and public transit systems that support educational outreach or research initiatives.
